Our Story

Founded by Donald Cropp in 1996, Colony Builders is a family owned company that is driven by its dedication to quality and personal attention to our clients. 

Mr. Cropp’s experience began in the 1960s as a helper in his father’s homebuilding business while attending high school and college.  In 1975, Donald graduated from the California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Urban Planning, with a minor in Industrial Arts.  In 1979, Mr. Cropp entered the University of Pittsburgh and in 1981 received a Masters degree in Public Administration.  Upon graduation, he moved to Texas and began his career as a superintendent for a major home building company and was soon promoted to Project Manager.  He then went on to work for several nationally known building and development companies and worked his way up to Operations Manager for one of the larger building companies in Texas.

Mr. Cropp moved to St. Mary’s County in 1987 to become Operations Manager for Parragon Builders, owners of the Wildewood Planned Community.  Between 1987 and 1996, he was in charge of the construction of over 400 single family homes, 140 multi-family homes and numerous commercial and retail buildings. 

In 1996 when Colony Builders was founded, the focus of our business was large commercial and retail development.   During this time, Colony Builders designed and oversaw the development of several major construction projects in St. Mary’s County which included: the First Colony Planned Unit Development at the corner of Route 235 and Route 4, and the Porto Bello Estates Residential Development located in Drayden, Maryland.  After the completion of these projects, Mr. Cropp decided to scale back the company and pursue the one occupation that gave him the greatest satisfaction: building quality custom homes, which was taught to him by his father who was a custom homebuilder in Southwestern Pennsylvania during the 1960s.
